Where you snorkel in Punta Cana
The catamaran sails from Bávaro to the coral shelf that runs parallel to the resort coastline, a shallow, protected site where visibility is usually good and the current is gentle.
You will see parrotfish, sergeant majors, sea fans and, with luck, a ray passing under the boat. A crew member enters the water with the group and points out what is worth looking at.
Do you need to know how to swim?
No. Everyone wears a life vest, so you float without effort, and the crew stays in the water throughout. Beginners get a short briefing on clearing the mask and breathing through the snorkel before jumping in.
If you prefer to stay on board you can: many travellers snorkel only at the sandbar stop, where the water is waist-deep.

Best time of year and time of day
Visibility is best from December to May, when the sea is calmest, but the reef is snorkelable all year. Morning departures generally have flatter water and clearer visibility than afternoon ones.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen only: regular sunscreen damages coral and is discouraged on the reef.
