What the cenote swim is like
The cave sits about 25 minutes off the main road, inland from Macao Beach. After the countryside track and the plantation tasting, the guide parks the vehicles and walks the group down to the entrance. Inside, the water is fresh, calm and roughly 2 to 3 metres deep, lit from the opening above.
You stay around 30 minutes. Non-swimmers are fine: everyone wears a life jacket and the guide stays in the water with the group the whole time.
What to bring to the cenote
Swimwear under your clothes, a towel, biodegradable sunscreen only (regular sunscreen and oils are not allowed in the water) and a waterproof phone case if you want your own photos. Leave valuables at the hotel; the vehicles are not lockable.
Cenote or beach — you get both
The same 4-hour tour stops at Macao Beach after the cave, so you finish the morning in the sea. That is why we do not sell the cenote as a separate excursion: on its own it is a 30-minute stop, and inside the buggy circuit it is the highlight of a full half day for $45.
