What to Wear for an ATV Buggy Tour in Punta Cana (Complete Guide)

R&C Dreams Adventure

If you have already booked a buggy tour in Punta Cana, the next question is usually the same: what should I wear? The short answer is dress for dirt, sun and surprise rain. The red-clay trails around Bávaro and Macao are dusty when dry and muddy after any shower, and the tropical sun does not forgive exposed shoulders.

The basics: dress for dirt, sun and surprise rain

Punta Cana's countryside sits on red laterite soil. It brushes off when dry, but after rain it clings to fabric. Lightweight, quick-dry clothing is better than heavy cotton. Dark colors hide dust better than white or pastels. A light long-sleeve shirt protects your arms from sunburn and branches without overheating.

Footwear: closed-toe shoes are non-negotiable

This is the rule we repeat most often. Open sandals, flip-flops or water shoes are not allowed on the pedals or around the buggies. Wear sneakers or trail shoes with a closed toe and good grip. They will get dusty or muddy, so do not bring your newest pair. Most guests leave them at the hotel afterward and rinse them in the shower.

Clothing we recommend

  • Light long-sleeve shirt or breathable T-shirt — protects from sun and trail dust.
  • Athletic shorts or leggings — comfortable for getting in and out of the vehicle.
  • Swimwear underneath — the Taíno cave swim and Macao Beach stop are much easier if you are already ready.
  • Bandana or buff — covers your nose and mouth on dusty stretches. We sell them on site, but bring your own if you have one.
  • Hat or cap — useful during the briefing and beach stop; stow it under the seat while driving.

What to leave at the hotel

Leave jewelry, watches, large cameras, drones, nice sunglasses and anything you would hate to lose or scratch. Bumpy trails and water stops do not mix with valuables. Phones are fine if kept in a zipped pocket or a small waterproof pouch; leave them in the dry bag we provide during the cave swim.

Sun and bug protection

Apply reef-safe or regular sunscreen before pick-up and bring a travel size to reapply after the cave swim. Insect repellent is rarely needed mid-day, but it helps at the plantation stop if you are sensitive to mosquitoes.

Should I bring a change of clothes?

Yes. Bring a clean shirt and shorts in your hotel bag. You will be wet, dusty or both by the end of the tour. Changing rooms are available at the finish point. Most guests keep their swimwear on and just swap the top layer before the ride back to the hotel.

Final checklist

  1. Closed-toe shoes with grip
  2. Quick-dry shirt and shorts
  3. Swimwear underneath
  4. Bandana or buff
  5. Sunglasses you can afford to scratch
  6. Sunscreen and a small towel
  7. Change of clothes in the transfer vehicle
  8. Cash or card for photos, drinks or tips
